on my car #1 is for the tach cable but what is this plate #2 for?
should there be two clips like #1 on each side of the bracket for the tach cable or just one?

My cars have only one clip @ #1 for the tacho cable.
A similar clip @ #2 holds the temp.gage capillary tube.

p.s: Both cars have been seriously molested, so above setup might not be original :oops:

Erick,

Here are two photos of my engine bay and the bracket in question ('66 230SL). I believe my setup to be correct for my year; judging from period photos I've looked at, I think things may have been different for later 113s.

On mine, #1 holds the tach cable, there are two #2 clips (both holding the temperature gauge wire or tube), there is a a metal clip attached opposite #1 that holds the brake vaccuum line, and finally, a pair of plastic clips on the bracket "legs" that route the spark plug wires.

Hi. Great photos and great engine! From memory, I have the bracket holding the vacuum hose, but no others. Very interesting ..... more things to buy!

If you are referring to the white ribbed plastic thingy, which I also have, I believe it is a condensation trap to remove water that might otherwise end up in the master cylinder vacuum reservoir. I believe that this was only used for a certain period and then later eliminated, probably because it could leak vacuum and maybe water condensation wasn't really an issue?

In my 230SL parts book, Group 15:

Main bracket: 129 150 01 73
(from man. engine x0-011122)
(from auto engine x2-003177)

Small spark plug bracket for main bracket: 000 159 01 40

Small vacuum line bracket for main bracket: 001 988 22 78
(listed for Left Hand Drive only)

It does not show brackets for tach cable or temp gage capillary tube.

Hi. This may be common knowledge but earlier cars had a metal trough that held the spark plug wires in place. The bracket in question then butted up to it.

Mine has two small clips that hold temperature wire. No clip for the condensation trap hose or tach cable.

my temperature cable is to short to go around the bracket but I do have a clip for the tach my car is a late 1971 euro

The correct routing for the tach cable is through a clip attached to the bolted on plate, not the top of the bracket assembly. On my car and all the period photos of the cars there is no clip on the forward top angled part of the bracket assembly. On the rear is a U- clip for the vacuum line to the brake booster. The temperature guage capillary tube is clipped into the plastic clips for the spark plug wires (on those cars without the metal tube). It resides in the middle set of clips, passing under the spark plug wires for #5 & #6 on the rear bracket and in the same position on the forward bracket.

I won't be able to post a photo for perhaps a couple of days. In the meantime, the Setright book has a good photo pf a 280SL (?) engine compartment that shows the routing when using the bracket assembly/plastic clips. Also, the Brooklands book (the one with all the old magazine articles) shows several decent engine compartment photos. Aussie's 230SL shows a good photo of the routing with the metal tube. The tach cable routing is the same as the later setup.

I can claim the name '' flower pot '' A look back hrough old posts will show that I did indeed come up with that.

Haven't come up with much else though......

There are a number of different arraingments for holding the cables and wires. I think most of what you see on your cars is in fact pretty much correct. Lots of changes over the full production and not at any particular time either.

I've recently didcovered that there were 1,800 190SL's that are RHD so they're pretty rare. They made 27,881 units so that's only about 6.5% of production.
There were 48,912 113's made. A good rough guess would be about 3,000 RHD cars.

This is a pic of Vince's 250SL. It shows the spark plug wires routed through the two plastic clips. It shows the thermostat's capillary tube along the middle of the spark plug wires. It shows the tachometer cable on the small metal bracket at the top.

So here's a perfect case why Aussie230SL pictures are such a good resource. Using them as an example of originality for an early car such as mine, I can see the way the cables should be routed. My tach cable is routed slightly different, and thus is not able to reach the clip. This doesn't surprise me since I am the one who replaced the cable! :? Thanks Neil.
