Two Generations Together
« on: May 19, 2019, 03:25:35 »
Early this year I bought a 1988 560SL with fairly solid bones and I have spent some time since addressing some of the mechanical and esthetic problems that came with it.  Yesterday and today I had top-down rides in the 107 and my 113 before putting them away for the summer.   I am departing tomorrow on my annual trek to Italy.  Attached are the first pictures I have taken of the two cars together.

Quite nice! I had a 107 (450 SL) before the Pagoda, and really like it, it was a wonderful cruiser. Safe travels my friend, see you in October.

Enjoy your summer in Italy Ralph! Too bad you cannot take the Pagoda with you. I too found a somewhat younger SL last year in May. It has a bit of a story and last fall I introduced the two for the first time. The story goes like this ...

In 2011 I was in Berlin and when you take a walk from the Brandenburg Gate on the Street Unter Den Linden you will pass a Mercedes novelty store selling all kinds of souvenirs (shirts, jackets, baseball caps, all kinds of model cars etc), they also had the new SL 63 AMG Baujahr 2011 in the store. It was the only car that they could master in the small store. Needless to say I fell in love with it and after enjoying a cup of coffee with a piece of great strudel in the store I purchased the model and took it back home to Canada.  Anyway, I left the model with my salesman (a good friend) on his desk at the MB Dealership. I told him “Bill if you ever get a nice low mileage SL in for trade call me.

Well it took almost 6 years and I got the call, Bill called and said “Dieter your car is here” I went straight to the store and traded my then 2012 C63 AMG in for that car on the spot.  The SL 63 AMG belonged to a lady she is our Airport Manager here in London, Ontario and when I purchased this car she had only 37,000 KM on the odometer (hardly broken in at that time). The picture of the two is my iPad Desktop picture naturally :)

I took that photo of the two last fall during a cleaning session, before putting the Pagoda away for the winter. I am fortunate to have found 2 of my dream cars.

John, they are probably discussing how the red British beast made it into an otherwise all German garage!

Very nice Ralph,

I bought a 1989 560SL last year with 32,000 miles.  Nice to have options on a sunny day although my wife has laid claim to the 560, Red is her favorite color 😎😎.  I enjoy the 1969 280SL more so all is good!
