rear end work
« on: February 17, 2005, 12:18:50 »
Hi

At the end of the driving season last summer, I experienced a driver's side rear brake fire. The fire wasnt extensive, but the wheel was so hot that it took me 45 minutes to stop the wheel from hissing as I poured water on it. The person whom I bought the car from graciously sent me a pair of rotors, a pair of calipers, a new master cylinder and new brake lines. My problem right now is I have the Haynes service manual, and it doesnt show you anything of value, especially in the rear end. Can anyone recommend a service manual that will give me all the detail I need to do this job. I should say that I am a driver and not a mechanic. My son is a mechanic but he has requested a good service manual. Any advise is appreciated.

Regards

Rear disks, so you must have a 280SL?  Let us know model and year of your car.

As seen in this link, Mercedes-Benz published a Service Manual for these cars.  It's commonly referred to as the BBB or Big Blue Book.  It has lots of details about almost every job imagineable.  There were several versions published, so make sure you get the one for your car.  It's currently available new on CD, but you can get old paperback ones on eBay, this site, MBCA site, etc.  The next book after the BBB that you need is a MB Spare Parts List.  This large manual shows every part for your car, every bolt and washer, in exploded view and it has each part number (original and superceeded).  It's a huge help.

Specifically, what job?  Do you just want to remove calipers and replace pads & rotors, or are you looking to refurbish the whole rear axle?

I dont know what I am going to find when I rip it apart. I may get be with rotors, calipers and hoses. What else might I expect to find damaged?
