Prop shaft cantering star
« on: September 04, 2019, 12:20:45 »
I am reconditioning the prop shaft of my 250sl. The centring flange (star) has a rubber seal in the front. This needs replacing.
When you see inside this star, from the back , I see a circlip and a very strong spring inside.
Could some one help me as to how to replace this rubber seal. Will it need a specialist tool to squeeze the strong spring.
Anyone had experience in this matter.

The rubber seal does not go inside the flange. It merely slips on the end of the output shaft of the transmission. When the driveshaft is connected the soft sponge rubber seal compresses between the transmission flange and centering flange. Also notice that the centering flange uses a thin O-ring on the driveshaft side. The rubber seals keep grease from extruding out onto the rubber flex disc when lubricating.

Oh! so simple.
I have ordered a new seal from local MB dealer. I don’t know what it looks like when new.
The old one is hard rubber stuck into the groove in front of the flange. So the soft spongy seal has found its way into the groove.
Joe , your reply is much appreciated.
Thank you
