Installing seat belts with kinder seat in place
« on: February 17, 2005, 15:08:43 »
Hi,

My 1964 230 SL Euro model has just started a full blown body restauration. The vehicle is about to be totally dismantled and all rust will be repaired prior to sand blasting and repaint in 180 Silver grey metallic. The vehicle is born with a rear kinder seat - which is nice as we have two kids, but we would also like to get rolling seat belts installed on the front seats. We do have a set of original fixed seat belts (from another Pagoda), which alternatively could be installed. In both cases the problem seems to be that there is no space at the "B" door post, as the rear kinder seat takes up all the space. Does anyone know how seat belts were fitted originally with the kinder seat in place?

Thanks for you help!

Finn

I posed this same question in another thread awhile back, so I'm very curious to hear from Richard Madison or others who have a factory seatbelt back there.

My late USA model 280 SL came with a Kinder seat. The car has the original front seat belts but there are no seat belts for the Kinder seat. I've never seen an original seat belt for a Kinder seat.

Mille,

If I understand your question, you are trying to understand how to install the new style retractable belt *in the front seat* when there is a kinder seat fitted in the rear.  I am having a kinder seat installed with the new style retractable seat belts.  I think the passenger side belt is inverted.  Here is a picture.

If I read your question incorrectly, ignore this post!

Best,

Tom

Hi Tom,

You perfectly understood my question and I can see from your photo that there is actually space for the belt. Did your car have the fixings installed by the factory - or were they retrofit? I neeed to get the fixings (nuts)welded into the posts and need to know exactly where to place them.

Thanks a lot

Mille,
I had mine retrofitted.  There is a kit you can buy from the dealer that has instructions.  Let me see if I can get some pictures of the welds so you can see the location.

Best,

Tom
