engine detail progressing

My most serious fault in my engine bay are the top of the fender wells.  Visited my partially diassembled car yesterday and we had a long discussion of my options.  To properly paint the wells and do the job "right" would require dropping the engine.  Then if your doing that you may as well repaint the whole car.....and his (my detailer/restorer) final comment is what got me,  after that, though, you'll probably never want to drive the car.

I want to use this car and we're going ahead with restoring much of the engine bay  any suggestions as to how to tidy up the wells short of removing the engine.

Here's what I did,

Take everything out that you can,
(radiator, break booster, hoses ,linkage battery holder, insulation, overflow tank, wiper motor, etc.)get as much off the block as you can. Then you can wrap what's left in cling wrap (commercial size)
you should have plenty of room to sand, prep and paint without having to remove the block.
THen everything goes back all clean and shiny!!!
          Good Luck!!
