Type of Graphics Printed on Bosch 4 Pin Relay
« on: April 09, 2020, 20:54:10 »
I am refurbishing a couple of relays to have spares.

Was the original graphic printed on the relay like on the picture attached? Like made with a stamp?

What made me think that was the wiper relay I have just refurbished (picture attached). I know it is different manufacturer and a bit different period (black were earlier), but I thought perhaps Bosch were also stamped. How was it originally done?

Pawell,

You may not know this, but I developed a dry transfer for these relays many years ago. Bud's Benz now sells them and uses the same vendor for the dry transfers. Yes, the originals were stamped on and not a decal. The stamps on the original ones were much neater and cleaner than the later produced units. First attached is original. You can see the later ones produced are much sloppier.

Below is a flicker link that I used when I sold the transfers and might still be helpful. Second attached is what they look like with the dry transfer. Yes, they are bit more, but are very durable and easy to apply. BTW, Bud's, Authentic and Miller's also sell the rubber grommets for the relays to make them look brand new.

And yes, the earlier relays were black with white letters and Bud's has those as well.

Wallace, thank you for your kind attention.

I am aware of the procedure, thank you, I have studied this before. I also am aware of the decal application process we have in the Technical Manual (not for me, I am not patient enough) and I used the Authentic Classic dry transfer decals in the past.

What I did not know is that the real thing had the stamped image.

Then now I think I will switch from decals that are $40 per relay, and landed in Europe $60 per relay. I have 3 relays to refurbish, I bought bunch of them on facebook. I tried to find a dry transfer printer here, I figured there is a way to transfer graphic having it printed on foil on laser printer. But if the original was stamped then I will try to do stamped. I paid $20 for 3 stamps and I can do multiple relays.

I am in the middle of the process. It is not good quality, but if it was done this way, then I think I will also do it with a stamp. I know I did wiper relay upside down - but I figured it is more convenient to read this way and I left it upside down. ;)

Any place you make stamps for the office use. I sent them the graphics from pdf we have in Tech Manual (Full Members) and got 3 stamps (2 for 4pin relay, 1 for wiper relay) received by courier the next day.

I sent them also dimensions in the e-mail, just in case the pdf loses scale when they open it.

Lots of practice required when you want to try! Have a guide tool made and have a cloth with paint cleaner at hand! Practice placement and pressure strenght. As you see I should have practiced more...

Interestingly back when I developed those transfers, the printing technology was not at the point where one can do what you can do now. Amazing how quickly things change!

Does any one have a reverse copy of the PDF in the tech manual? I've tried every printer I could find and nothing could print the sheet in mirror reverse.

When I was looking for ways to refurbish several relays I have, I came across forum for guys fixing/refurbishing or making audio equipment. One of the ways they do the prints is to:
- print reversed image on the foil or gummed paper on the laser printer
- transfer the print on the object in a way similar to dry transfer, but while heating it up with the hot air blower

I have not tried that as I went for the stamps.

The graphics we have on pdf are priceless. For the 4 pin, 5 pin (which I think was not used on a Pagoda, but was probably used in other cars) and the wiper relay. They have resolution that is good for graphic work. None of the ways of doing the relays would be possible without them.

Does any one have a reverse copy of the PDF in the tech manual? I've tried every printer I could find and nothing could print the sheet in mirror reverse.

A home way (or amateur way) of doing it (although I am sure there is a correct way of doing this, including kind request to the authors to include reversed images) can be the following (or this is how I tried it):
- use the snipping tool and isolate the image from pdf
- left click on image in the snipping tool window and click copy
- open blank file in ppt or word
- paste the image
- drag the left or right hand side of the image to reverse the image
- print what you received, check if resolution is good enough (you will lose some) and check dimensions

You may lose on resolution, but it still may be good enough for print out.

Or: use the snipping tool and edit the contents of snipping tool in Paint or Paint 3D or in a picture viewer that has the image reversing tool. In the snipping tool you have the image. You can then work on it in any software for image editing. Just resolution and dimensions need to be managed.

I could not edit pdf - you have to sign up, register, pay, etc....

I have moved the mirrored relay PDF to where the engineering tags are in our premium content section.
