I wanted to touch base with the experts on re-assembly of the engine (230SL) and timing of the crankshaft, camshaft and horizontal timing gear. When installing the timing chain, I will set the crankshaft to 0 deg TDC and align the camshaft to the marks on the forward cam pedestal. I'm curious about the timing of the HTG? I recall there was a tick mark on the side of the spline that faces the fuel injection pump so it would seem that I also need to set the HTG to a prescribed position at that same time (engine at TDC). Is this correct? I realize that I also have to be concerned about the FIP timing upon installation of the pump but I recall that I will set the engine to a position (20 deg ATDC?) at that time and be sure the FIP is also in position (not 180 degs out) where the notch is lined up (more about this later).
The distributor will be installed such that the rotor button points at the scribe in the housing when that time comes.
Any good advice, please?
Thank you,
Harry
