Brake Booster RHD 250SL 1967 Pagoda
« on: October 05, 2019, 11:48:10 »
Hi All

I've followed the advice on using this forum but now feel the need to post.

The Bakelite components in mine are damaged and I'm told beyond repair. Despair!

Is there anyone out there that has a brake booster suitable for my right hand drive car for sale?

Or can anyone help me to buy the correct LHD brake booster and have it adapted in the UK?

Any info on part numbers would be helpful too.
What is the part number for my RHD car?
What is the LHD part number that I may need to buy and have adapted?

Hi Dips,
The brake boosters are the same. They are not L or R handed.
I suggest you place your question two subjects further down in the “ Drive train, fuel, suspension, etc”, paragraph for better exposure.
The brake boosters are still available, it seems.
Regards

The LHD and RHD boosters are indeed different. The RHD using a ball on the actuating end and the LHD using the fork style. The vacuum port is also in a different location. I’d suggest getting in contact with Colin Ferns (stickandrudderman) on the forum. Apparently he has used donor components from LHD boosters to repair RHD boosters.

I have had drawings made for the commonly failed Bakelite post and have had a 3D prototype printed to prove concept.

The problem now is that because they use sliding seals the surface must be very smooth and hard which precludes the cheaper materials used commonly in 3D printing.
Further, there is the issue of potential liability which means the part must be made in such a way as to pretty much guarantee it will never fail.
The quotes I've had so far for machining or printing in surgical grade stainless steel are enormous so if any of you have contacts in that world let's hear it!

I'm sure I've seen titanium being 3d printed. Could that be used/ground down?

Couldn't the part be molded in Bakelite? Just remake it the way it used to be?

The T51 will w108 booster has the same identical Baker lite part in it.  The booster can be disassembled quite easily.  Then just swap out the rhd steel rods.  I did it so know 100pc it's possible.  W108 boosters are widely available.
