280SL gas cap
« on: September 16, 2020, 02:18:40 »
Is the original gas cap made of aluminum versus the chrome lockable one I have?

If your 280 SL is a '70 or '71 and your chrome gas cap is keyed to the rest of your car, then it is original.
It helps if you put some basic info about your car in your signature to help others understand your question.
Enjoy the ride !!

I bought mine form the classic center which had the double sided key.  Cost be about $400 about 6 years ago.  Not sure if they are still available or not.  nice for originality though.

I checked with the Classic center about a year ago for a double sided key or the single sided key caps and they were both NLA. Authentic Classics has the single sided and double sided key types. Pricey though!

Regarding the original question, most are chrome. I've seen some polished aluminum ones but they eventually get tarnished, like this one.

Dear Gentlemen, dear fellow owners!
Please....!  :o
Please, please don't get confused here.   :( The Pagoda SL has had a chromed gas cap, only! Never, ever anything else.

Please see also our Wiki section on the lockable gas cap. The info is all in there.

Ooops, it was not! Edited it and added the missing info .

In summary:
A000 471 2030 gas cap from YMOS; all chromed, non-vented, ones-sided key, up to 280 SL #010355
and
A000 471 4730 gas cap from YMOS; all chromed, non-vented, double-sided key, 280 SL only from '010356 onwards.

Enjoy!
