Lower wishbone mounting bolts
« on: February 16, 2020, 16:36:59 »
Hello all,
I reassembled my lower wishbone as shown is the picture and shown in the BBB drawing with the M12 bolts head (Item 12) facing down.
I than recognized the statement n the BBB to mount the bolts with the bolt-heads facing up after a repair is done. I can certainly do that but don’t understand the reasoning behind that.
I searched the posts but didn’t find an explanation. Does anyone know why this switch is done?

Thank you much

Hi Dirk,
I went through the same thought process. I think it is to make future dismounting easier by using the special tool to restrain both of the bolt heads together so you just have to undo the nuts from underneath
If you don't have the special tool then I assume it is pointless. That's my explanation, hope it's the right one.

Hi Peter,
Thanks, yup, that may be it.
Any progress on your "sticky" upper wishbone? I checked mine and I don't have the enforcement you are showing in the pic. I saw that Niemoeller is listing some for the sl's.

I always figured it was "Aircraft Rules" Bolts go in head up so if the nut falls off the bolt stays in the hole.

Just so! This is the reason for the BBB advising the bolt-heads to face up after a repair is performed.
The sequence of assembly and a need for efficient flow of production in the Factory led to the bolts being mounted in with the hex head towards the ground when our cars were built.

Thank you gentleman.
That makes sense. I will mount the bolts with the hex heads facing upwards.
