Hi Matt. I have responses to some of your recent questions.

1. From what I understand K&K is excellent and yes they will be less expensive than the dealer in many cases. Not all but many. I personally have used Sl Classics, BenzBarn, and Miller's over the years. They are all good resources for parts. For sheetmetal parts, K&K is THE place to shop.

2. Replacing the dash upholstery. Yes do it (either yourself or pay someone.) I did the latter. I purchased my MB-Tex (seat kit and material for dash, pillars, and kick panels) from Miller's and then sent it to a local upholstery guy. I think he did great. And the difference to the old one is night and day. Worth every penny. Others here have done the work themselves.

3. Redoing the wood. Yes do it. If your wood is still in tact, I would consider trying Hertitage Woodworks. They are the best. In my case, however, my wood was really cruddy. So I opted to buy the unfinished replacement wood (again from Miller's I think,) and install and finish it myself. I let my mechanic install it since he was doing my heater. Much easier when dash is apart. The pieces needed a little bit of hand trimming to fit just right. I stained it myself with a dark oak -- I think it turned out nice.

Good luck.

Matt,

I've had great experience with K&K and the others that James mentioned.   I've found that you have to have multiple sources to get the best price/coverage for the parts.

In some research of other postings on this forum, I recently came across this site:

http://sls.sparebase.de/bin/dbframes.phtml?mid=IN02

which seems to offer some promise as well, although I haven't compared price yet.

Good luck.

Just to second Christietz (and myself), I have found that each of the suppliers brings something different to the table. Miller's has an easy to use website, SL Classics has Ray who is a 113 parts expert and good prices, Benzbarn has Dan C. who is knows how to fix 113s as well as where to get parts. A lot depends on where you are as well. I am fond of US-based suppliers because its so easy to figure out pricing. However, many overseas folks use Van Dijk and SLS and report good things. The SLS website is very good and detailed.

James - do you have pics of your wood trims?  Curious to see what shade yours is in.  Took mine to a woodworker and he might have gotten the stain too dark. There seems to be one 'standard' wood color but I kinda like a darker color to go with my black interior.

I recently compared prices between SLS and Caliber Motors. Overall, very close. For some large items e.g. steering wheel, it might make sense to compare. If the order is larger, like mine, probably not since the economy of scale on shipping cost is significant.

The best thing about SLS is their interactive catalogue.  They are also very responsive.

Merrill,

You asked for it...I spent ungodly amounts of time and money on parts from suppliers cited in this thread.  To that end:

Cheryl at K&K is the Goddess of Mercedes sheet metal. Even MB themselves buys some sheet metal from them.  You need not even go anywhere else when it comes to purchasing or questions or anything on sheetmetal.  Cheryl is "da man"...er.."da woman".  Even though they do sell other parts, their start was on sheet metal.  I bought way too much sheet metal to get my basket case free of cancer and poor driving (dents, dings and bondo)and I suspect they had to get another truck to make all those deliveries.  They are a factory and actually have the dies and presses to fabricate some of this sheet metal that they sell.

I've had no bad experiences with any of the other suppliers mentioned, other then some of them didn't take me seriously when I asked for pricing and quantity discounts on a long laundry list of parts that looked like a Sindelfingen vendor order! (I think, though, that Caliber and Miller's are still counting the money to the detriment of the others[:0])  So, that being said:

Mike Ochoa at Miller's in California (they have an east coast office somewhere as well)was my main man on mechanical parts.  The only caveat is that if you are particular about "original" versus aftermarket or reproduction, make sure you understand what you are getting.  A lot of what Miller's has is aftermarket parts.  Absolutely nothing wrong with an aftermarket tie rod, for example, but you need to know what you are getting.  Don't assume anything.

Caliber supplied me with a lot of original parts available just from Mercedes, and at prices competitive with other sellers.  Fast service, because they are a large and professional dealer, with a separate "mail order" parts department.  I've been there and seen it.  You need a golf cart to get from one part of the property to another.  Tom Hanson used to be our 113 specialist but is now with the new MB Classic Center in Irvine.  I suspect someone has taken his place at Caliber.  You should note that some parts I got from other distributors had a Caliber label on it...

When the dollar was high and the Euro low, I did get a bunch of parts from DB-Depot and a great price.  Surprisingly easy to deal with and ship despite the ocean and language barrier.

Tom Koellner of Koellner SL is a regular contributor to our site and has some parts at attractive prices.  I will try him for something next time I need something.

Last but not least is our own Dr. Benz, Dan Caron.  A mere 3 hours from Toronto, 90 minutes from Detroit, and a million miles from anywhere in the wheat fields of Ontario.  A pleasant ferry ride from Marine City.  Dan's skills are legendary, and unlike our own Joe Alexander, Dan still does it for a living when he isn't on the tractor planting wheat.  I've been there three times, and Dan did some major servicing on my car including tracking down some elusive issues beyond the abilities of a normal mechanic.

It has been said before but we do owe a debt of gratitude to those professionals like Dan Caron and Tom Koellner who regularly contribute to our site and provide their normally paid professional knowledge for free.  So, it is a nice gesture to throw some business their way when you have the opportunity to do so.

Well said, Mike. A wise man once said, a good 113 mechanic is priceless -- but a good parts place is a close second.

Eryck, here is a shot of my wood. The picture doesn't really show it but the dash pieces are the same color as the speaker grill. That is what I used to get my color -- as the grill (and console box) are still original. I have seen many woods darker and some similar to mine. There was a thread a while back discussing this.

Both Tim and Cheryl are top rate people.  Excellent services and good prices.  There repo sheet metal is galvanized and an interesting option.  They also were kind enough to consolidate all my ebay purchases and ship the package to the UK for a very reasonable amount.

Thanks Mike. Some of you may know that I'm one of K$K's dealers. Ray, Bud's, Millar's, Will, a guy in Europe and myself are their guys. I've been selling their stuff since 1988 so I know them well.

I now have a guy that will refinish MB wood. He did a complete set for a 1958 220S Cab a few years ago and it was fantastic. He put all new veneer on the base wood and then hand polished every piece. He used zebra wood but I've seen some of his work in burl - very pretty.
