Late model locking gas cap

I’ve been contemplating purchasing a new locking OEM gas cap for my 71 US version 280SL. The car uses a 2 sided key system with a master key and a valet key. The doors, ignition, trunk and gas cap were all keyed to the master key.  I ran across this locking gas cap

I’d like to purchase it but I’m not sure it can be keyed to operate with my key.  If I need a separate key for it, then I’ll go with the far cheaper OEM cap used on earlier models.  They almost a third the price. 

So if anyone has info on the possibility of rekeying this it would be appreciated.

Compare the price from MB dealer for gas cap made to your particular key number. It costs money, but then you keep the one key car. I did it a couple of years ago.

Another option is to buy the gas cap and have it re-keyed by some good shop, but you would have to make sure they can do it.

The Ymos keyed gas caps are able to be rekeyed fairly simply. Any respectable locksmith will have no problem doing so. You can also do it yourself if you have a pin kit, old locks to salvage donor pins from, or are patient with a file and small parts.

I have the pinning kits for the 2 sided key but was able to get the gas cap apart to re-key the tumbler. I can re-key any other of the locks on the late model Pagoda cars but was afraid of ruining a new gas cap so I keyed all the other locks to match the gas cap.

Jack, hiding under the cork gasket are  2 small holes. One of them has a detent. Using a pick move the flat detent towards the outside of the cap while pulling the chrome face of the cap. The 2 halves will separate allowing access to the tumbler. Ymos style only. This will not work on a Neiman or Huf keyed cap.

Thank-you Tyler as I also have the style in your picture but this one is a single sided key. I was able to take this one apart and tried to apply the same technique with my later cap to no avail.

That's not the primary problem here.

You can always obtain an early style single-sided key gas cap (A000 471 2030) and open that one - in the way Alfred indicated here - and then try to exchange the lock cylinder for a late style gascap cylinder  like the one in your authenticclassic pic (MB parts number A000 471 4730).

Problem is - where to get a suitable donor lock cylinder for a late style two-sided key 
- which your locksmith then hopefully can convert/adapt to your key number.

You need a parts donor gas cap, i.e. from a contemporary MB sedan (= non-chromed).
But if you get one (I have one though) - how to open this properly and remove the tumbler?

What if you have lost the key for the gas cap and doors, and the ignition key fits neither one? Best way to proceed?

And the car is locked? In the garage or somewhere else? Soft top or hard top?

Did you have the door and gas cap keys done as per the datacard number?

Not locked. Do not have data card. Hard top. Apparently ignition key got replaced and when sold out of an estate they could not find the original door and gas cap key. However, the locking gas cap looks like a newer replacement.

I was afraid you had it locked somewhere else than your garage...

If you do not have any data as for what the key number might have been for doors and for gas cap, i would probably take one of the door tumblers out to the locksmith to make a key for it...

I've seen key codes stamped on the side of the glove box lock barrel and also on the base of the door handles.
