Steering clicking sound
« on: June 01, 2020, 16:48:28 »
Hi all,

Do any of you know what may be causing a small "clicking" sound every time I move my steering wheel a little bit to the right or a little bit to the left?

Is this something I should be concerned because I have never heard it before in the 3 years I've had my 250sl  :-\

Thanks!

I found the same problem with mine.

There are three of bolts that hold the steering box to the chassis through the engine compartment. Each has a bushing that's welded to the chassis. One of the bushing broke loose allowing for some movement and thus the click. The bolts are accessed through the left wheel well. The bolts will be tight.

You can confirm by have someone look at the box or the bolts in the wheel well while you move the steering wheel. It will move a little.

Hope this helps.

Check the steering coupling between the box and the shaft.  The rubber deteriorates and will cause play and chatter.

I had a similar issue on my car and the coupler did it -- made a huge difference in the overall steering feel.

Have someone work the steering wheel while you look for the noise and play. Start with looking at the steering coupling, then all points below.
