steering problem

well it seems I broke my 230SL .
My car is a 1964 manual. It does NOT have power steering. Yesterday when maneuvering to park at home I heard a noise that sounded like something had broken. It was when the steering was near to full lock.
Later when I drove out , the steering was heavy and the car was difficult to keep in a straight line. If I turned to the right it was extremely hard to turn back to the left, and so on. So I returned to the garage and looked underneath, but couldnt see anything obviously wrong.
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what is wrong? Much appreciated.

Perhaps the U-joint in the connection between the steering wheel and the steering box/rack has come apart. Not sure exactly how you get to it, but that would be my first suspect.

Sounds like the PS is not operable. Pulling to one side may mean other steering or suspension part failures as well so need to carefully inspect the suspension and steering components:
PS pump
PS box
belt
control arm upper lower
hard to say with the info

I think you just need to get under the car and do a thorough inspection.  Maybe the idler arm came loose and you are massively out of alignment?  Or some other suspension or steering linkage part has failed.

Manual steering gear boxes should be checked for fluid level at intervals. They take 90W gear oil and have a fill plug. If yours is dry, you might have a bigger problem.

thanks Cees..that sounds feasible  particularly as there is nothing visible under the  ar that looks damaged.
