Hello. Is there a way to re-key my gas cap to match fit my ignition key?

Hello,
There is a fine description of the Pagoda gas cap in the Tech Manual (Wiki).
Re-keying is mentioned. This can be the same key as ignition, but only on late 280 SL cars.
You have access since you are Full Member.   Look under Fuel system, section
Fuel tank and Locking gas cap

Hello Nameless,

Impressive array of car collection you have...
Eight wonderful cars and one not so...

Well, from your cars, you might now that some (until 1969) have got three keys according to the datacard before the one-key-un/locks-it all came in.

On the earlier system where the door key also locks/unocks the gas cap (parts number A000 471 2030), re-keying is usually no problem,
but on the late system (A000 471 4730) it is ...
because the main problem is you cannot currently get such a gascap
and second they are not easy to be opened.

First of all you need a late-style (on key for all) gas cap.

Good luck,

Achim

Thanks Achim
I know which model you are referring to but its been a wonderful family car "thus far" :)
My 180G 280 113 has the 3 key system
1. Ignition key
2. Door key
3. Trunk key but non will operate the gas cap lock so I am assuming its not the original gas cap or lock mechanism has failed

The 050 280 has a one key system as you mentioned but gas cap has no lock

Ebay has a host of them used from $120 to $365 new

Thanks for the part #

Here is a way-out possibility.  On my gas cap/key (which are original) if the key doesn't work when inserted,  I take it out and then insert  facing in the opposite direction and it works.  (I have the three key system)

Have you considered taking the cap to a locksmith?
