Anyone using a portable air conditioner?
« on: August 04, 2020, 21:41:52 »
I was planning on having an air conditioner installed cause driving my "new" 250SL  in this Arizona heat almost gave me heat stroke. But it's apparently going to need other more basic work done first. Found a dry broken belt (alternator?) on the pulley behind the fan belt. Bad omen.

Anyway, now i'm considering a portable A/C for when it has been checked out and made reliable. I've seen several like EVA CHILL.

Anyone have any experience with something like this?

Read the amazon reviews. Being in the desert you might find some relief since it is more of a humidifier than a device that lowers the temperature of a space.

I can't find anything called Eva Chill anywhere.  I suspect you mean a portable evaporative cooler, which is NOT an air conditioner.  It's what we used to call a swamp cooler.  It adds moisture to the air and it cools things some.  Works best with windows OPEN.  Might help, don't know...  If you are in the Valley of the Sun I suspect it really isn't going to be anything but awful until you get proper AC.

I have used one in my VW camper when its really hot.  They are an evaporative cooler and work well in small spaces and very portable.

Thanks for all the responses.
Scott, evaChill is a small swamp cooler made by EvaPolar; see Evapolar.com.
From everything i've read so far, i agree this is not going to be a solution.
Will have to wait till i can get a proper a/c unit in the car.

I used something similar in a small room in our house. Yes, the drier the climate, the more effective. Were you going to use this in your car when driving? My concern there is the water tank. I would be worried about the water splashing around while driving. Not so much about water on the carpet, but water getting into the electricals of the cooler itself. think these are meant to be stationary when operating unless it is designed otherwise. Just a thought.

Yes, instability and sloshing water are serious concerns and also reasons why I’ve decided to not use a portable unit.
