Original Grille screws?
« on: August 09, 2016, 14:27:56 »
hi guys,

I have finally acquired '66 230SL.. Garry has helped me alot along the way, and I thank him for that! Hes a true gentleman!

I have a question regarding the grille screws... I bought a set of new screws and sunken washers that are commonly known to be the most original (probably what you have on your grille also). So I took off the ones that are currently on my grille to replace with the new ones (and even though my car has had a brand new paint job by the previous owner), it got me thinking, could these be the original screws and sunken washers? Does anyone know for a fact that the original screws and sunken washers look like what most suppliers are offering on the market?

Cheers,
Robbin

Congratulations Robbin,
to your new car !

As to your question,
the washers and screws in the bag on your first picture (image1) are the correct ones for the grille.
All chrome, and the washers are solid ! The ones on your images2 and~3 are incorrect.

The ones Hauser shows on the Authentic link appear to be correct as well.

Good luck

Hi Robbin,

Yes the set hauser posted are the same I purchased from Buds Benz in 2013 at Wiliamsburg, one of the Judges pointed out to me that mine on the car are not correct and that Buds Benz (they had a stand at the hotel during our 50st) had the correct ones for sale. So I purchased a set. So I assume mine on the car now are same as the ones originals.

You can buy a complete 58 parts set here:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Befestigungssatz-Bugverzierung-NEU-MERCEDES-Pagode-W113-58-Teile-/371679372712
It includes the important solid washers that Achim mentioned:
http://www.ebay.de/itm/Chrom-Senkscheiben-NEU-Bugverzierung-MERCEDES-Pagode-W113/371679372631
The vendor also has smaller kits, just search his site.
All are of very high quality.

Thanks so much for the reply everyone!

I bought my set of Grille screw kit from Authentic Classics as well (these are apparently same grille screws as 190SLs). I am really just questioning "he said she said"... whether or not anyone has taken screws from an original car and compared it with modern "original" replacements..

But if Achim (old screws collector) say so, I guess I'll have to go with it!

Well Robbin, if you have doubts you can simply compare the DIN part numbers that Chromschrauben24.de sells with those that you'll find in the spare parts lists. They are indeed DIN 7983 for the screws and N56f for the cup washers.
Simple, isn't it?  ;)
