Seems like a nice original car that needs paint:

Well, it may be a great deal but I have one sort of general problem with one thing. This is not the first time I have seen a description that says NO RUST or something to that effect. What is that red stuff I see in the trunk? Wouldn't "a little surface rust" or something be better? Am I wrong to think this?

James,
Yes, words have specific meanings.  That's why there are so many words in our (or any) language, to be able to communicate specific ideas.  If someone says "no rust", they should mean it.  I would think that's impossible on a car like this that is said to be original and unrestored, the trunk picture being one example of possibly hundreds!

This is a provocative post.  It is fun to see pictures, cars for sale, and especially, buttons people push when selling them.  One thing I like try to figure out is the motivation of the poster in the potential sale; NY to CA seems harmless if not unrelated.  And I'm particularly intriqued by cars that appear to have been sitting for which people want top dollar; I suppose there are those who want original, original, original, but personally, that's not for me.  I don't buy it--I think cars that are "up to date," so to speak, and haven't been sitting, have more to offer.  And I would certainly look for one that has  "dimples in the headlights"!

Peter,

I have no financial interest in this car and posted it purely to pass along what, in my opinion, appears to be an interesting example. I've never even heard of the dealer.

I thought it seemed like it could, potentially, be a good example. If I were in the market, I'd probably at least investigate it.

Any knowledgable dealer should at least get the model number correct.

Hello all,

I fully agree to Doug's opinion.
It's an interesting one, definitely!

I think the nice thing about seeing, and possibly purchasing, a car like this is you can see its flaws. They're not concealed by new paint and god-knows-what-else. You can get a sense of the actual integrity of the thing based on more than how shiny its paint is, how few door dings it has, or what its odometer says.

It's hard to say what it's worth without knowing more. I think Ed Cave's experience is probably a good barometer for the current market in cars that are unrestored "survivors." He may have even been slightly under market since the car had some mechanical issues that seemed more serious than they actually were.

A new number is part of the res-to-ra-shun process - helps ID the product.

Good catch!!  Maybe it has a Ford Mustang engine...

I'm not looking to step on anyone's toes--unless, of course, they deserve it.  I looked around and saw one where the guy said something like "no critics, just buyers".  I mean, if you're going to post it...

I don't think it is unwise to consider from where anyone is coming.  Personally, I'm thinking seriously about selling mine; thinking as a buyer is maybe the inverse of that.  If I were going to buy one it could be like the one I bought, which was one that wasn't really restored, just one that had been very well maintained while it was being driven.  I don't think it is good for them to sit, and I think we've all seen examples--who knows what the deal is with this one--where knobs and things literally fall off in your hand.  And, so it has X number of miles on it, and in addition it has been sitting and the engine has not been rebuilt...  Who knows.  I wonder if, based on a web link, people will fly somewhere and plop down a bunch of money for a car like this.

There are people who treat these or other old or hobby cars better than their wives.  One theory is to find these situations.

And most of all, how, or by whom, is it going to be driven?  That's the problem with mine--what the Hell do I do with it?  It is the wrong car for Denver.  I think when these cars first hit the U.S. they were, more than anything else, the ultimate Southern California sports car.  I bought mine in La Jolla (actually, Ranch Santa Fe) and another theory is maybe that's where it belongs.

I respect the opinions of how, or why, or whatever.  Sure, it's in the eye of the beholder...

Doug and Achim are right--I would inspect both these cars.  The Los Gatos one has 2 respected dealers behind it and comes from a very wealthy area (likely to have been well serviced).

As for the model number error, my seller didn't even know they were called Pagodas, and my car was a cream puff!

Here's another one that needs paint (and, according to the seller, 2% of its other parts):

I just looked at the car that Doug Kim had posted from Riverside, CA.

Well, I wouldn't buy it for $15000. It is very unmolested, but would need attention in almost all areas cosmetically. I didn't take it for a drive. The car has virtually never seen rust, has what appears to be the original and accurate "dimples" at the head lights and would make a great base for a full restoration. It looks like the car sold unseen to a dealer in Holland for about $23000. The Europeans are buying the Pagodas from here fast at this exchange rate.

Regards, Tom

Hi Guys,

That Dutch buyer will put 10K Euro into this car and sell it for 40K.  The prices in Europe are going up strongly.  I refuse to sell my Carling...she is staying in Sarasota!!! 8)
