Stripes in the speedometer

My Euro 230SL speedometer has a small band of red and white stripes between 50 and 60 kph (31 and 37 mph).  What are they for?  City speed limits in Germany?  Red line for first gear?  Just decoration?

OK, I should have used the search function first.  According to Cees at http://sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=1618, my first supposition (city speeed limit) was correct.
