Ok, I shouldn't say this BUT........

 I have a '74 280 with a twin cam engine. I put a red coil in it a few years ago without changing anything else and it's still running. This system which is CD ignition like a late 280SL, may not be exactly the same.

I had a lot of problems with rich running and poor starting which the hotter coil more or less cured. It is, after all, an engine noted for all kinds of carb problems.

Dr. Benz -- Some years ago I had the ignition system of my '71 280SL (produced in July '70) changed to an electronic, breakerless system.  The car has since run much, much better.

I'm running a blue coil.  Is that the optimal coil for the breakerless ignition system?

Bob,

I have located the ballast that is connected to the 15 terminal on the coil.  It is a rectangular shape plastic tube attached to the frame forward of the coil.  I cannot locate the 0.4 ohm ballast and would like to know if you can describe it or have a picture of it. I believe you need to bypass the transistorized module if you are going to refit it with the red coil.
