Whoa there...

Do you have any idea of what you may be looking for? An SL? Well, that's a wide range of models over a long period of time; here, we focus on one: W113. 230-250-280SL. They are the same but very different.
Are you sure you are up for a project? How deep are your pockets?
You may consider narrowing things down a bit, and that may take some time if you are new to Mercedes and new to this model...you may decide you want something older or newer.
There are plenty of SLs available in many places; only a few here.

Michael: You speak my heart! It is very frustrating to see many people having decided they want a certain car and then just go out and buy one. Those are the ones who bid $120,000 on a W113 on BaT without knowing anything about them. When my partners and I have a client asking us to find a car, we usually sit down with them and determine how much they know about the specific model and what they are getting into. This way, we are on the same page regarding value and condition. I got a kick out of the guy who bought a W113 on BaT which was far from original and then he questioned the seller of another one later about "fender notches"

Back in the early 1990s, I toyed with the idea of getting a classic of some kind. I had experience with Brits, so focused on that. I wanted more power and uniqueness than an MGB or a Triumph TR6. Hated Jaguars. I kind of narrowed to a Sunbeam Tiger, or Triumph Stag. So the first thing I did was buy a good book on a Stag, and study it...

SL is such a general term that may cost you $500 for a parts car and probably in excess of $2M for a concourse level prime vehicle.
Know your 'product', first. And to avoid pitfalls, help us help you. Lots of knowledge here if you can narrow your search and share particulars of what you are after.
