Some of my more fun 4-wheel machines ... earlier to later:

'58 Chevy Imala, 2-door with 348 CI and tri-power
'58 Corvette 4-spd w/FI
'65 GTO
'71 240Z
2 Jeeps (real jeep-Jeeps ... 1 in Africa, later 1 in Idaho)
'73 911-S ... followed by 4 more new 911s, through the mid-80s
'64 356-SC
'56 Jag XK140
'71 280SL 4-spd
'02 Jag S-Type R
'04 CLK500 cabriolet

If I could have any of these back again top choices would be the '58 Corvette and '64 356-SC.  As mentioned previously I'm keeping the '71 280SL forever.

At Age 16, '79 Camaro Berlinetta - not a good car...Detroit's first and only chance with me.

'85 VW Jetta - a great car for a 22 year old.
'87 Mazda - 626 - another great car
'89 Volvo 760GL - boxy but good  :D
'95 Mazda Millenia - my favorite 'til I got rear-ended and totalled
'98 Lexus ES300 - not my favorite, but I live in a "Lexus town"

While I like Japanese cars for quality and comfort...I love my German Steel - 69' 280SL  :)

my more interesting cars have been:

1966 Alfa Romeo GTV (oil slick no doubt still on pavement in front of parents' house)
Jaguar XJ6 4,2 (terrible state that car was in; a friend who borrowed it had to brake with his foot on the pavement out of the door once)
Ford Capri
Opel Manta
2 x Triumph Spitfire (great little cars, always something going, going, gone: sometimes even literally, like that one time a rear wire wheel decided to venture off by itself)
2 x Daf 55
Plymouth Fury (one tankful of gas for every 100 miles)
Heavily souped-up, highly modified Mini Cooper (blew up engine when the brakes failed, and the only way to slow it down was to put in in too-low a gear causing major over-revving)
1996 Alfa Romeo GTV V6 turbo
1998 Fiat Coupe 5-cylinder turbo
One of my all-time favorites: a US-spec 1982 Mercedes 300 D (turbodiesel) sedan

Tom in Boise's list sounds like fun!

I'm a young pup on this forum, not in the typical MB demographic.

1976 Buick Electra Limited (1985 - 1994), gave to charity
1985 Nissan 300ZX (1994 - 1995), totalled, not my fault
1983 Toyota Celica GTS (1995 - 1996), traded in on new Dodge
1996 Dodge Neon Sport Coupe (1996 - 2002), traded in on E420
1966 Mercedes-Benz 230SL (2000 - present)
1994 Mercedes-Benz E420 (2002 - present)

Mike, I acknowledge that things are much better now with American cars...I did buy a Ford Windstar for my wife the first year they came out and was reasonably pleased...until we traded in for a more comfortable Sienna.

I buy with cash expecting to keep a long time and I've observed that foreign steel still seems to have lower cost of ownership and better longevity.   Unfortunately, I don't think many folks care about quality beyond the terms of the lease...but that's not me :?

OK, I'm off my soapbox.   Sorry

My list is short so here goes:

1968 Plymouth Station Wagon (in Florida-during August and September, I had more water in that car than Lake Kissimmee)

1975 Mitsubishi Galant (I was a student then - after 3 weeks, a guy hit me at about 14 mph - and totalled my car.)

1982 Golf GLS - that thing really rocked

1981 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham (in Houston, a black car with broken a/c is not such a hot idea - no wonder I got it so cheap)

1970 Cadillac de Ville Convertible (top motor was broken - I was lying on the trunk, raising up the top with my legs, there was no other way to get it up when driving alone...)

1993 Citroen XM Station Wagon Turbo Diesel. My daily ride. 39 Miles to the gallon.

1964 230SL. 39 smiles to the mile.

About the Detroit thing -- when it comes to vehicles like the Chevy Tahoe (and other American Full-size Trucks) they are certainly doing something right!

This is an interesting thread and note the wide variety of cars owned at one time or another by members of the group.  Here's my 10 cents worth, and you can probably detect a slight Ford bias here.  They are a fine car.  I've never had a Ford engine apart in the 45 years I have driven Fords. North American cars take a back seat to no one for serviceability, practicality, price and performance.

1970 Mercedes Benz 280SL.  I've wanted one for 40 years.  I lived in Germany when the Pagoda first came out, and now my dream to own one has come true.  "This could be the start of a beautiful friendship", to paraphrase Humphrey Bogart to Claud Rains in the closing moments of "Casablanca"

2003 Ford Taurus SEL 3.0L 24Valve V6.  Better on gas, goes like hell.
2000 Ford Club Wagon 5.4 Triton V8.  Big, fast, comfortable. My "goin' to Florida vehicle"

1994 Thunderbird.  My favourite of all my cars. 4.6 SOHC V8, utterly bulletproof for 10 years.  Good on gas, went like hell!

1989 Ford Taurus LX 3.8 V6.  Great car.  Kept 10 years
1985 Plymouth Reliant 2 dr. Same comments as 83 below.
1981 Chevrolet Van.  A good reliable vehicle.  Had for 15 years.
1983 Plymouth Reliant.  Nice little car.  I was commuting 60 mi a day and it was nice and warm in the winter after driving the Bug.
1972 VW Super Beetle.  Kept 6 years.  Not bad for a 6'6 /300 lb guy!!
1975 Ford Gran Torino.  First new car. Think Starsky & Hutch - same colours.  351 V8 Cleveland. Kept for 12 years
1972 Mercury Marquis 400 cu in V8 2 dr hardtop
1966 Mercury Parklane 4 dr hardtop 428 cu in, 345 hp.  Very fast.
1959 Monarch (Canadian built Mercury)  383 V8. 126" wheelbase.  Huge car. I took it to Germany for three years on an RCAF posting.
1957 Mercury Monterrey 4 dr hardtop. 312 V8. Babe magnet!  Met my wife with this car. It's long gone, but she's still here after 43 years.  Now known as "the Benz Babe".
1953 Mercury 2 dr, flathead V8 25mpg on a good day, usually on 100-130 aviation fuel!!  A well used but very serviceable car.

Cheers

Hello Norton,
The 1963 300SL roadster was only $4700.00 when I bought it in 1974. It was the rare late version with alloy block and disc brakes. It was in excellent condition! Was mostly original and had many options like the hardtop and the Becker Mexico Radio. I guess I was fortunate since I could not afford to buy a car like this at today's going rate!
