Early 230SL part #
« on: April 26, 2005, 06:55:33 »
Does anybody here have an early 230SL parts book?

I'm looking for the part number of a clamp which holds the breather pipe / cold start fuel line to the throttle body.

The breather pipe itself is 2 piece steel with a small hose connector joining the two.

thanks

Our local  dealers do not have the old parts catalogs so when I get parts from them I have to point to the part I need on the 280SL screen on their computer.
I have the small parts book (catalog A dated 1963) that came with my car. It is the same size as the owners manual and was supplied to owners to help them order parts by mail back in the days when Mercedes dealers were few and far between.
It doesn't have parts numbers but the tables are the same as the big parts catalogs at the dealers. The part you are looking for is part number 65 on table 2 of catalog A.
Try the classic center. If the part is no longer available and you can not locate one somewhere it does not look like it would be too hard to make

Thanks, Tom,
Thought I'll try the easy way before trying to make one.

Hi. Kind of related. My breather pipe has turned a rusty hue over the years. Is there something that could get it back to silver? I have actually sanded some of it with emory cloth -- it sort of worked but probably not the best way. Any ideas?

Eh? Silver...  The part was yellow chromated from factory. So, I suggest turning it in at a surface treatment vendor in your area.

This pipe is not available anymore. If you find one from a parts car it is likely to be as rusty as the one you have (water condensing inside pipe). M-B recognised the problem in 1967, and introduced a plastic part.

For my W108 250SE, I'm having a new part made with the original as a pattern

To clean slightly rusty parts like pipes, I use a 3M pad with a 50/50 mix of soft soap and white spirit

Hi Hans. Thanks. Sadly, any hint of a yellow hue is long gone. It appears mostly grey in color -- similar to Neil's which is shown in Naj's first picture. However, the rust has turned it more reddish.

Hi, James,
These steel pipes rust from the inside as well because any condensate/moisture in the engine is pushed out thru these
pipes and condenses on its way to the throttle intake.

I too had new pipes made to pattern (borrowed from a 220 SEb).
I'm going to try and plate them with the kit from Casewell.

PO had made a copper pipe but it was a bit shorter and incorrectly shaped.

Hans, I thought 250 engines already had the rubber/plastic pipe combination. Thanks for the part #.

Naj,
You say "breather pipe/cold start fuel line".  Which is it, air or fuel line?

My valve cover breather tube is slightly different than your, one piece, but it enters the venturi at the same place.  Here are some part numbers for that from my 230SL parts book.  It does not specify part numbers before 10/20-010787 or 12/22-002991.

Versions 10/20 from engine 010787 and on
Versions 12/22 from engine 002991 and on
121 094 02 91 - moulded hose valve cover to breather tube
900269 026100 - hose clamp at valve cover
900269 020100 - hose clamp at venturi

Versions 10/20 from engine 010787 to 144471
Versions 12/22 from engine 002991 to 005668
127 016 09 30 - breather tube
127 094 07 91 - moulded hose breather tube to venturi

Versions 10/20 from engine 014472 and on
Versions 12/22 from engine 005669 and on
129 016 00 30 - breather tube
180 997 10 82 - moulded hose breather tube to venturi
000288 020006 - hose clamp at venturi

I hope this helps?

Naj,
If you can't get the parts you should be able to get the pipe made from stainless steel tubing. Ship / Marine suppliers

If the breather is rotting from the inside out it is probably because it never gets hot enough or you are doing lots of short journeys. I have seen this problem on other cars before. It sometimes gets so bad that the tube blocks.I eventually used insulating "tape" sometimes called exhaust bandage to help. Demon Tweeks sells it for heat insulation on exhaust manifolds etc.

Have a look at the picture at the top of the thread.
Both the cold start fuel line and the breather pipe are clamped together at the top of the throttle valve.
I think Hans may have the correct part # as this clamp (I'll soon know as its on order) is for early engines before the change to plastic/rubber breather pipe.

No worries Naj!
Speaking of no worries Mo will not suffer from condensation or running too cold it was in the high 30's today (Degrees C that is!) in Dubai
