Universal Joint
« on: April 26, 2021, 01:36:57 »
Hi All....I am newbie to the site/forum.  It is really a great site full of useful information.  I am restoring the drive-train in my 65 230sl euro.  My question is that I am having trouble figuring out what U-joints to use. I purchased MBZ p/n 111 410 00 31 which is correct for my car/carrier but the problem is the new joint is .040 too wide on the C-clip OD.  I am thinking it may be the manufacturer (GKN 728/3) is out of spec or is the wrong one...any recommended brand or p/n?

Thanks,
Kim Pierson

Hi Kim,
Welcome.
When rebuilding my (66) driveshaft I had a c-clip / retaining ring issue as well. However, I couldn’t properly seat the retaining rings in the groove, no matter what I tried. After eventually measuring the thickness of the rings, I recognized that the new ones that came with the U-joints were slightly thicker. (Not much, I believe 0.2 mm or so). I ended up cleaning and using the old retaining rings.

Thanks, Dirk for responding to my issue.  The old c-clips are the same thickness.  They don't make c-clips as thin as I needed so I believe the u-joints are not made to specs.  The OD on the clips is .040 too wide to fit into the carrier.  Time to chuck those and order another brand.

Thanks again.

Kim
