I have been warned that some folks know how to get addresses based on plate numbers. I don’t know the insides of DMV so don’t know the details - others with dmv state by state knowledge obviously will have different opinions.
Sure someone can stand on the streets and wait until they spot a car they want and note the plate number and do what they want. However, its a lot easier and significantly more efficient to troll for cars you want and plate numbers on the internet.
I do not have first hand knowledge of thefts via plate numbers found on the net and hence addresses, but I have been advised more than once that it’s real and happening. The late Tom Collitt (esteemed member here) cautioned me as well, as his car was stolen.
As a courtesy to the owners of these cars, I choose to be cautious.
