Body cut-outs in rear
« on: May 25, 2021, 19:12:38 »
Hello,
I am working on the insulation / sound dampening of the cabin. I intend to also add some insulation to the rear and I am wondering, what is the purpose of the cuts out in the rear (Kinderseat) area, picture 2? Do I ever need access the these? I am sure it was discussed before but I  searched the forum and could not find anything.
Thank you for you help.

it is not used in most of the cars.

For originality I did not glued insulation material, but I filled it with very thick insulation material that can be removed if necessary. Same in the inner wheel wells

I sprayed my cavities with rockerguard, then made a nice padded bag for each side and then use them for my emergency kit - all the stuff you need in an emergency - zap straps, some tools like wrenches, pliers electrical tester, screw driver, emergency blanket, different types of wire - electrical tape, tire plugs, road flare, fuses etc.   look up what to take on a rally and basically thats what I put in there.  I think there is even a couple tiny bottles of Buffalo Trace Bourbon, couple hot wheels for cranky kids and a couple knives (filletting and a chef's knife and a sharpener)   there is nothing worse than showing ap at a bbq and the hosts knives are so dull they don't cut.

If you leave your car out in the rain this area will fill up with water so I didn't glue any foam in there.

Both of my cavities were rusted out and the previous owner just filled the bottom up with chicken wire, newspaper and bondo.  I removed that and made new bottoms out of galvanized metal and welded them in.

Thanks guys,
Peter, didn't think of just laying the pad in, interesting. I think the approach and the materials used for sound / head dampening  have come a long way since the 60'ties. I am using a 5mm thick 3 layer material with an aluminum sheet embedded in-between. Easy to work with and forms nice around the metal. Even though I like originality, in this area I believe there is some room for improvements.
Ian, very funny. My rear area was a mess too. It took quiet a bit of sheet metal manufacturing to get it back into shape.
However, I still don't know what the two port holes are for. Hard to believe they are just for possible water drainage.

Those cutouts are simply drains for the primer when they dipped the body.  Never used again.
