Engine rebuild
« on: May 23, 2021, 17:33:21 »
I am looking for a recommendation for an engine rebuild in the UK. Someone who is knowledgeable and thorough but does not charge the earth! Any suggestions? GF 280 SL :D

Hi, sorry but since I’m not from uk I cannot give you an answer but I talked with my personal mechanic and he told me that an engine is an engine and for this reason a good mechanic should be able to rebuild every kind of engine . Do you need to rebuild the entire engine or only the head ? I’ve seen many pagodas solving their problems by only an head rebuild .

I’ve had mine rebuilt twice. I won’t say who to avoid having this problem.
But ColinFerns (in Richmond) did it the 2nd time and it runs beautifully.

If you must be local, Hilton &Moss would work but cannot vouch for them, other than to say they project “pricey” and no idea if they do engines in house or send them out.

Ciao Mauro, I really disagree with your mechanic.  True, any mechanic can probably put an engine together with the help of a manual, but to put together an engine that really sings requires tons of experience and "know-how".  See James' post - 2 mechanics - 2 different experiences with the same engine.

@James: would you know the hourly range one has to pay for good mechanical work in the UK?

Other than being an overhead camshaft and a few quirks related to that our engines would be equally at home under the bonnet of a tractor.

What is the difference between an engine and our mercedes engine ?
A trained and experienced mechanic should be able to rebuild any kind of engine and not only Mercedes . If he doesn’t , is better that he changes his job I guess .
