How to secure the glovebox rosette?

Hi all, I just had my glovebox lining re-done, and am taking the opportunity to replace the broken aluminium grommet.

I have bent back the tabs so that it is tightly held in place... the problem I am now finding is that when the glovebox door is opened, and the spring passes its inflection point to 'snap' open, the glovebox arm is making pretty hard contact with the back of the grommet. I can see that its not going to take many of these until the grommet works itself loose.

Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

Do you have the outer part of the grommet frame missing? When the frame is full and leather is there, the head of the rod rests on the leather. At least this is how I have it.

Yes, there is no frame to support the outside edge of the grommet... Effectively the grommet is sitting within a partially-formed circle.

This would explain why I am having this problem, and I did think it looked a bit odd, but have seen other cars with that section missing and presumed it was for a reason!

It is just that this rosette (or grommet) is sitting in "oval" cut out of the door face, it is surrounded with steel all the way. There is stress on this tiny, narrow outside stripe and it may be breaking off... I think.

I've welded the opening shut, just big enough for the spring retainer to pass through. Then adjust the door properly. this is not the case now. See picture.

Thanks all... I guess I need to try and find a way to fix that section without having to re-do all the upholstery

Hi, Rahul,

In the last of the photos in your original post, one can see that there is quite a bit of the metal piano hinge showing along the "bottom" of the glove box door.  The screws that secure the door to this hinge control the location of the door in the dash opening, but also control the "arc" of the arm as the door moves from open to closed (and back).  I found that adjusting the location of the door on the hinge also allowed me to adjust the arc of the arm such that it no longer dragged along the rosette.

Thanks David, yep there will no doubt be a lot of tweaking required to get a proper fit, judging by some of the other forum posts I've read.

The more pressing issue at the moment is patching up that hole. Right now there is nothing in place to prevent the spring-loaded arm from breaking through the gap.

I just realized where I have seen photos of another glovebox with a similar issue to mine... Our very own technical manual!

I guess that is why I had thought the hole's missing edge was an intentional design.
