Prop shaft removal on a 230SL
« on: July 14, 2021, 12:03:34 »
So I’m contemplating changing the prop shaft center bearing bushing as it’s hardened and the bearing moves about - thudding at times.

My 230SL has an enclosed tunnel where the prop shaft sits unlike the pictures I’ve seen on this forum where the prop shaft looks more easily accessible. Maybe 280SL? Is anybody familiar with the enclosed type of tunnel on 230SL?

It looks like either I have to drop the gearbox or drop the entire rear axle in order to get the prop shaft out either through the front or through the rear.

I recall from my clutch change a couple of years ago that I did try to pull the prop shaft out the front just as an exercise and I seem to recall the engine was in the way and I was telling myself that if I ever needed to pull the prop shaft I’d be in deep trouble. My memory is hazy now and I can’t be sure. I think the shaft can’t be removed from the front of the engine is still in the car.

I was wondering if there anyone who has the enclosed tunnel 230SL chassis and has encountered this issue before.

Is it not about undoing the big nut right after the centering flange and compressing the prop shaft?

That is how I did that, but it was indeed 280SL.

The 230 does not have the big nut Pawel mentions but works otherwise the same. There should be no issue in removing it. I have done it and didn't experience any problems. May be you post some pics of the area of concern?
