Can someone help me solve this mystery please?

My Friends Mother recently died and although she never owned a Mercedes he found this in her possessions. I'm sure its really obvious if you know but can someone help with what it is and perhaps what it could be from? many thanks Doug

It appears to be fabricated from a newer model star.

It's someone's fabrication to cover the hole on the grill surround of cars that have a bonnet star. They used to get stolen a lot thanks to The Beasty Boys popularising the wearing of automotive badges as jewellery!

Certain years had just the badge with no hood star at all.
