Water in soft top compartment
« on: May 06, 2005, 00:31:54 »
Hi all. Finding a fair amout of rain water in my soft top compartment (64 230 euro) I can't see any possibility of having been meant to seal, so that only leaves drainage. But I don't see the drains either. Where are they and is this normal?

Thanks.

There are drains (see group 77 #30 in parts cat). On the left and right side of compartment (pic) the base has two rubber tubes that drain down into the foward quarter panel area (pic) and then out through a hole/cutout  behind or above the rocker panels. These get pluged up and is why you see so much rust in these areas. Also, soft top water can flow over the lip at the lid hinges and spill into the trunk, also why the floor tends to rust under the mats.

Wow, Tom. That really captures it. Nice work. It looks like you are really going full-bore on the restoration. Would love to see any and all photos of your project.

Great pix. So how does one un-clog these drain tubes if the car isn't all apart?

Tom.

By the way Tom230SL, is that POR-13 you have encase your car in?

Yeah my '64 gets water in here too but I dont appear to have any drain tubes !  I tried making some myself with a bit of success but I joined them to the big circular grommet on the soft top box which isn't really ideal as the water tends to still collect forward of this area.

So my question is .......the tube is nicely photographed in Toms picture, but what does the top end of the tube look like, at least does anyone hav a photo of the area where you would try to poke it free in the softop well ?

Water runs down the inside of the panel where Toms tube is and collects in the area under the rear shelf, it also creeps along the top of the sill and collects under the seats ! My lid seals is now and things fit pretty tight there, I could adjust but the lid hardly wants to close currently !

Regards,
Ben in Ireland.

Yeah, I missed "de pun".
I used PPG DP40 etching primer on bare prepped steel with rust removed on 99% of the car (excellent stuff). I used POR15 on some unreachable (very few) areas like inside rear cross member, inside hardtop rear drain channels.

Ben, Tom
I do not have a pic of the top of the drain tube, but if you will look in the top storage compartment, just to the outside of the top mounting bracket, in the forward most corner you should be able to see the top of the drain tube.  These tubes are often deteriorated  to the point they are no longer servicable.  They leak.  Using a wire or other metal object will  most surely punch a hole in the rubber tube.  Water leaks from the tube and accumulates under the kinder seat foot well or under the shelf if you do not have the third seat.  Either way the water cannot get out and rusts through the metal. The last time I checked, rubber tubes are no longer available. I solved this problem by going to the plumbing department of the local building supply store and finding a metal tube that I could modify and use for a drain line.  It just happened to be a feed line for a commode tank.  I trimmed the flange of the metal tube so it would fit into the recess where the original rubber tube fit  and cut the tube to about 2 inches in length.  I used an appropriate diameter plastic tube to run from the metal tube to the inside of the quarter panel as shown in Tom's picture.  I sealed flange of the metal tube to the storage compartment with 3M Heavy Drip Check Sealer.  The plastic tubing is pushed all the way up onto the metal tube and held in place with a hose clamp.  Remember also, the metal flange should be recessed lower than the surrounding area.  Otherwise water well still collect inside the storage compartment.

On the subject of primers.  DP40 is  great stuff.  The color is red oxide.  I use DP 90 mostly.  All the same good qualities as DP 40, but in a semigloss black (NOT FLAT BLACK) color.  The paint is a durable as a top coat and is ideal color for the inside of the trunk, top storage compartment, grille parts and the rocker panels.

Good luck.
