Right rear axle shaft removal
« on: April 06, 2022, 01:16:33 »
I’ve looked on here but couldn’t find anything. Luckily I took the left rear axle out first to replace the seals because I probably would have damaged the right side which requires extra steps.
Looking at the BBB and other manuals I need to remove the rear suspension springs (both), compensating spring, and the rubber buffers.  That’s after you’ve removed the axle shaft itself.
Do these things really need to be removed?

What exactly are you trying to do? You don’t need to take the rear end out remove the seals in the axels.

I’m taking out the axle shafts individually to replace the inner and outer seals at the wheel bearing.
I am not removing the entire rear axle.

I was measuring the axial play on the right rear bearing and its .020”.  I believe that’s in within limits.
I believe the information is on page 360 in the Technical Data book. I think the limit is .70mm which is .027”.  The book seems to mix the radial and axial limits.
Can I confirm that’s correct?

Kevkeller, the whole shebang, I think, with removing springs, etc.to rmove the right hand shaft is because you are supposed to lift it to release a circlip that you supposedly have there.

I am not sure if this is exactly struggling with, just seems to me.

I would first try to remove the shaft in a "normal" way as not all the cars have that circlip.

I’ve got the shaft out but to put it back the manuals have you remove both left and right side springs etc. Yes after reading it is to raise both wheels as high as possible for alignment I guess.

It does have a circlip on the end of the shaft. Without taking it all apart I don’t understand the bearing system at the other end of the shaft and why you have to raise both wheels up. The circlip is so small I don’t even understand the use of it.

I think someone has had this apart before.  There wasn’t any grease on the barrel bearing. .020” axial movement seems excessive but I believe it’s within tolerances.

When I look at K & K and other sites they only show a standard wheel bearing that fits the left side, not the barrel bearing for the right side. Hope they are still available if needed.

If you can’t find it locally. Just the bearing is also available.
Look at your old one but I believe the bearing number is 20208.

There is a lot on the forum about the rear right shaft removal, installation anf the bearing. Just search for it.

Raising half-axis is for the circlip to disengage and engage. The circlip is helping shaft not to fall out from differential on sharp and fast cornering. Not all cars have it.

The bearing is special self-centering bearing. Easiest to buy at Mercedes, not horribly expensive. It is described in the post - the type and markings. There is awhole dispute abou: can you use roller bearing instead of ball bearing.

I have searched before posting. I usually do. However looking up right rear axle bearing seal or any combination shows very few posts. Now my posts show up. But maybe I’m doing something wrong.

I have also been through Andy Burn’s post but his is a 230.

I do appreciate your help though. Thank you.

Ok, putting (exactly like that, with parenthesis) in search window: "rear bearing"
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=25418.msg181950#msg181950
https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=4882.msg30339#msg30339
That is on the bearing.
I understand you have some manual. Under the search I provided you get 42 hits - I think they cover all the tips you need.

Again: the raising of shafts is for the circlip to disengage and engage, not for alignment.

Here is what we have in the Technical Manual on this topic: https://www.sl113.org/wiki/DriveShaft/RearWheelBearings

What else are you missing that I can help find?

It probably looks exactly for those words together.
Thank you Powell. You are the research man here I’ve noticed. I’ll let you know if I need anything else.

You have to be at the top level of the forum when you search... otherwise it will only search in the board, or even the topic, you are in.  See Pagoda Notes volume 1, issue 2, and especially volume 9, issue 2. Or this thread: https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=30783.0
