Recovering dash in MB tex.

My dash was cracked in a few spots and I wanted to recover it. Unfortunately, my car has an MB-tex interior and I wanted to keep it as original as possible. I though about just covering the dash in leather but wanted to keep it MB-tex if I could so I tried a couple experiments and came up with something that works pretty well. I soaked a paper towel in Acetone and wet down the back of the vinyl.  I avoided getting any on the front.  I then peeled the cloth scrim off the back of the vinyl leaving a nice pliable, thin, solid vinyl sheet. Sort of like skived vinyl.  A little heat gun and my favorite vinyl top contact cement and voila!

This is a very interesting way to do it!
Certainly makes the work at corners easier.
I thought that the fabric is needed for strength. You are not concerned about cracking later on without the cloth?

Not at all.  The PVC is quite elastic as opposed to the original covering which I assume is ABS.

Maybe I should recover some dash parts with this method. I'm not 100% satisfied with my previous work. I found the sharp corners challenging.

Good idea, I've tried to pull the cloth off, but doesn't really work. Is the acetone super aggressive or not to risky? Will it melt thru?

It’s aggressive but manageable. Keep it off the face and you will be fine.

The proof is in the pudding.  No one can deny the finished product is form fitting and a beautiful looking.

Just going to ad a couple of tips here as well, --when applying the contact adhesive, make sure the items
gluing  are at least 30 minutes apart before attaching, this is a common problem, has to be  touch dry
with your hand before applying.
And also, you can double up and apply cement  twice,--especially on porous items--again -half hour apart.
Also there is a fabulous product  called   303 Proctective  for vinly--its the ultimate  uv protection,
i first used this product ,when i lived in US about year 1999--2000--  .Made in Chicago IL.

Wayne,
I ended up gluing up just barely dry for a couple reasons.  It allowed me to reposition if need be and the solvent in the glue helped soften the vinyl making it easier to form.  A couple of the parts I had to do twice so I peeled off the mistake and wiped all the glue off with acetone.

Vinyl was from GAHH.  I use Weld Wood High Heat Resistant contact cement.  If it can hold a Landau to on a Cadillac in Texas heat it is good enough for me.  Unfortunately only available in gallons.

My interior color is MB Tex Dark Brown.  on the GAH website it says Dark Brown color code is 709.  Is this the correct one for my interior?
