Help identifying these components???
« on: January 30, 2022, 22:45:57 »
Hi, I have looked through our site, google, etc, and i'm exhausted. What are these under-hood elec. components?  the one on the left seems to be wired to the horns? FYI this is a 67 230sl from France.

Thanks in advance...

Hi,

If you read this set of posts (started by me):

https://www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=32842.msg239152#msg239152

you'll see my piece of strange electrical equipment in my French 1966 230SL.  The consensus is that the French rules of the time (and maybe other European countries as well) required electrical cut-offs in case of an accident.  The dial/knob on the top of mine is a reset, and yours is probably the same.  (My mechanic bypassed this when the engine was rebuilt, so it's in the engine compartment just for originality, but not connected.)

Clearly looks to me like an aftermarket piece. No factory-originally delivered component.
The plugs are different, MB did not use these.
Clearly an add-on.

Ok, they are definitely old - close to period, I guess I'd like to get them out of my harness, I wonder what they do?

Didn't some of the cars have an airhorn kind of set up? Country horn?
I have seen it on a French 113 some time ago at the LaJolla concours.

Hi,
the red relay 514 is an addition for connecting additional components such as horns or lamps.
Are there any clues on the second box.

Interesting info WRe....I definitely don't see any airhorns lurking under the hood :). The other unit has lost its labels some time ago, its only mark is a stamped "21A" on the top, and has a direct connection to the battery, then goes down to the original horns, and another wire jumps to the 514 relay.  I haven't chased the wires from the 514, but I will this week.

Hi,
the second box is a relay too, a heavy duty relay, probably Marchal 413.
