Air Filter for 230sl
« on: May 23, 2005, 09:30:42 »
Dear all,

Bought an air filter from SLS. It is cylindrical and has the paper based element.  However, when I (my mechanic) opened the air filter unit in my car, it is a two piece construction with what looks to be like a steel mesh inside. Can anybody please help enlighten me on this one?

Could it be your car was supplied with an oil-bath type filter? Not as common as the paper-type but it was an option.

Yes, some markets (dusty conditions) were fitted with the oil bath filter.
Just clean the wire mesh screens (may be stacked three high) with kerosene or similar and blow dry. The bowl should also be removed and thoroughly cleaned as the dust settles in the oil at the base.
Refill with fresh engine oil upto the blob of paint at the base. Caution:Does not take much oil. If its overfilled, the oil will get sucked into the engine.
