Lead Additive for Unleaded Gasoline
« on: May 22, 2003, 14:51:00 »
I purchased my 1969 280 SL several weeks ago.

The previous owner said that I should put "Lead Substitute" into each tank of gas.

Is this actually necessary?

Thanks,
Phil

I'm sure others will chime in here but lead substitute is NOT needed with these cars...

Our local 'GURU' says the same.
The original valve seats are harder than the ones now supplied to convert heads for unleaded. So no additives required.

What about other additives? FI cleaners? Marvel Mystery Oil, which some entrust to keep seals in injection system lubed? Any users?

I've seen Techron being recommended to clean the injectors (Tom Hanson), but also recommendations against using any additives or cleaners (Achim Ahlert quoting official Daimler-Chrysler info). I don't use any additives and can confirm Naj's statement and can confirm Naj's statement that lead substitutes are not necessary that lead substitutes are not necessary ;-)
