1983 MB 280 SL - 107
« on: June 29, 2022, 21:16:19 »
The trouble lights came on the other day for the battery and alternation. So I assume the original alternator is shot. For years at low idle and headlights on the battery trouble light would glow.
For those of you who have 107s, is there any reason to upsize the alternator to handle the electric loads ?
I have had this tank for 10 years and it never let me down. so I want to do the right thing.
thanks,

jz

Don't complicate your life.  If you haven't added any consumers, don't plan on adding any, and everything has been working well to date, stick with what you have. BTW, you are only assuming that the alternator is "shot."  Have it examined by a reputable repair shop before committing any big $$$; it may be a simple fix is all that's necessary.

Zak it could be something as simple as your belt requiring tightening, or you may need a new alternator. But get someone to check it out. the 107s are an easy car to diagnose for the basics

Good luck!

I don't know, but does the "alternator" in the 107 have brushes?

I drove it to the shop this morning. Belt is tight with no squeal.
Red battery trouble light has remained on.
I will know the problem soon.
I don't know about brushes, Make S.

I got a new Bosch 70 amp alternator installed on Friday and with it the car runs better than ever.
In hind sight,  the original alternator light always glowed red at low idle in gear. The electric windows also caused the red light to go on when I closed the windows and if I closed both windows at the same time the idle would slow a bit and the engine changed sound, like it was straining a bit.
Now it seems that the car runs crisper and responds a bit more quickly... and the windows go up more quickly.
All is well now.
thanks,
