Rear Axel for a 1964 230SL - HELP
« on: September 28, 2022, 16:07:01 »
I am interested to know how hard it is to replace the rear of a 1964 230 with a later model 280 Disc brake version of the rear?

There have been a number of posts regarding the axle swap.

Try using the Search function to find the information. Use the search function, fourth in the row starting with "Home". I used "rear axle swap" (without the quotes and got two pages of hits.

Jonny B is right. I suggest looking for posts from GGR on the swap. I'm not sure he posted when he did it (he posted extensively on his project of swapping a 5.6 engine into his Pagoda which included a different differential) but he helped me do mine. The problem is that everything is heavy and a bit unwieldly and you're laying on your back but entirely doable.  If you swap over to disc brakes, you should also consider upgrading your braking system to include a brake pressure regulator, which, if you don't have one you will need. Search "brake pressure regulator".

There are several different gear ratios and especially if your car is an automatic you should read the posts on choosing the right ratio.  Good luck.   Lee

Suggest you contact Dan Carron, aka "Dr Benz”.  ( by phone will be more informative).  He is a regular contributor to this site. He is a wealth of knowledge and has done the swap you are describing. ( in fact, he can do it for you if you are near Lambton,Ontario 🇨🇦).  Failing that, he can provide you with the necessary axel and associated parts
