my 250sl has that black , thick, hard, material glued to the metal floor pans under the carpet. Some of it has peeled off over the years. and I would like to replace all of it. Do they still make this stuff?? what was it??? how do you get it off???

Hello,
You used to be able to buy it in rolls from the dealer. The same material was used in sedans of the era. There are many similar domestic sound deadening materials on the market.
Heat is the best way to remove it. A good heavy duty industrial heat gun and a scraper will work.

Which raises a question for me. I am considering installing Dynamat under the carpet when I replace it. I'm sure it will be a bear to remove some years down the road. I guess I can adopt the attitude that will be someone else's problem.
Has anyone done this more than a couple of years ago, and is there anything that you wish you had done at the time of installation.?

Check with an upholstery shop. They may have a similar material to the original. Here is the untouched matting in my car.

You can use Dynamat or Fat Mat. Then cover it with jute. I used Dynamat with jute under the carpet and it's fine. You can get that at a stereo store. Bud's Benz uses that when they restore a car and was recommended to me by Brad. He said you can get it at an auto stereo store.
