Clean all remaining old bushing out of the gap. Wrap the string around and around the shaft until you have built up enough layers of string to fill the gap. Next take super glue (not gel) and from the top start to saturate the string until it's soaked and will not absorb any more glue. Be extremely careful not to allow the glue to drip on you.When it dries, which is very quickly you will have a very durable bushing.
