Hello.  I am testing out the thread locking, or topic locking, feature to see if it can be used to create blog-style entries.  I believe this (topic locking) may only be available to Full Members, but I'm not sure.  I could use your help by trying to reply to this thread.  If you can't reply, send me a PM and let me know, and include if you're a Full Member or not.  I will probably ask the Moderator to take this down after testing is completed in a day or so.  Thanks!

I'm thinking of using this while I do my modest, limited refurbishment in 2023.  Basically, for any general segment of the work I'm doing (example, fuel system refurbishment) I would of course post all my questions and discussions in the appropriate forum (drive train, instruments, etc.), but I would collect the links to my threads, and other old threads that were informational, in my blog-style thread.  Actually, it wouldn't even really be a 'thread', it would just be the one opening message that would keep getting updated.  So, it would looks something like this:

Engine removal, restoration, and replacement
General statement of progress made.
Link 1
Link 2
...
Link X

Fuel system refurbishment
General statement of progress made.
Link 1
Link 2
...
Link X

Brake system refurbishment
General statement of progress made.
Link 1
Link 2
...
Link X

And so on for each area I'm keeping track of.  Maybe this is best kept in a doc on my own computer, I don't know.  Once it's all done, I hope to contribute to the Tech Manual with what I've learned.

Hi Rod,

Looks like you wish to organize your work, I think that is great!

There isa very simple way to do this, for example:-

1 - Create one thread.

2 - Give it a subject like "My 250SL Refurbishing Record"

3 - Start with your planned work:-

Engine removal, restoration, and replacement



Engine refurbishment

General statement of progress made.

Link 1

Link 2 etc.

Fuel system refurbishment

This project will be next, revisit for activities and photos

``````````````````````````````````````````````````

you see Rod, no-one can add tasks etc. or edit your first post only you. This way you can keep it organized and add system tasks, assemblies etc. and photos (link to an album were you can have more then 4 photos).

There would be no need to lock and or to unlock the thread. Other Members can post to you and you can reply to them. Your first thread will always (as long as you are a active full Member), remain as you wish it to be.

This way it might even be added to our Technical Manual in the future.

Another Tip I like to share with you is when you completed one task like the engine removal /refurbishment or replacement. Post a new post like "Completed Engine removal, see post No. 1 above" This then will show up to all as a unread post and they might then visit your thread again to follow you.

My concern is that people will have good intentions of helping in that main thread on the many issues and systems I'll be working through, and it will become a tangled mess of discussion.  Each issue or system should be addressed in its own thread in the proper forum, and I just want to centrally track of all those, by topic.  There will be many threads started, and even old threads that I find could be tracked as well.

I'm sure that over the 6 to 8 months (or more!) that I'll be working on my mechanical restoration, I will probably create a couple hundred discussion threads with all my questions and problems that I will face.  Also, when researching info to these questions and problems, I'll find some very informative old threads.  I want to keep track of all these threads, grouped by general topic, so I can find and reference them easily over time.  Perhaps it's best done in a MS Word doc on my PC.  I was just thinking it would be easier to do in post in the General forum.

Haha unfortunately the car resides in Southern California, where the salt and humidity can't eat it!

Bermuda has strict rules on importing cars, they must be 6 months or newer. As such the classic car (and bike) scene is limited to those that were originally brought to the island decades ago and religiously maintained since. Always cool to see a few MGs whizzing around from time to time!
