Emil Hauenschild Hamburg

Today I was replacing my seat belts as the old ones have lost their recoil and are unsafe. After lifting out the seat I noticed on the underside an original paper tag with the name ‘Emil Hauenschild, Hamburg 1,  75 FerdinandStr’.

I have seen this on one other post as well and appreciate this was the manufacturer of the early 230 fibre and glue padding in the ‘Fahrerkissen’ or drivers pillow. This is an early Jan 1964 230SL, do you think this is the original padding?

When did Emil start and stop supplying the padding for Pagoda’s.

It's always good to find original notes or paperwork when stripping things apart, i found a dated paper inside my interior mirror when i had the mirror re-silvered

There's no reason to think your padding isn't original, horsehair or other natural fibres can last centuries, there are plenty of 18th and 19th century chairs and settees still in use with the original padding, even after being recovered

I've read that Fehrer supplied the pads after Emil Hauenschild stopped trading, but can't see what date that happened, possibly with the 280SL, but only an owner who's stripped their seats or have original seats could confirm this

Unrelated question...: You say you have retractable seat belts in your 230SL. Can you tell me how and where the coil is installed? Maybe a picture?

Thanks Bob H, I agree, always nice to find a treasure hidden and left behind from previous restorations and upgrades.

Mike, new seat belts were installed in 1996 when it was first imported into Australia. A small bracket looks to have been welded low behind the seat on the B pillar for the retractable component and the shoulder restraint mounted on the top of the B pillar. After 26 years tension in the belts was loose and not retracting properly so I replaced them with new belts. Photos attached.

I installed mine under the parcel shelf. The belt easily slides through.

I have been pondering the "under shelf" installation but I am really concerned about the belts sliding freely through the gaps. The original installation as described by Mercedes in their service bulletin is a nightmare also, however. Who made the nut brackets? Were they readily available somewhere or custom made?
