I can't see 908 was ever a paint code for any Mercedes, i may be wrong, but i can't find it when i search.  The w113 codes are on this link, in the Tech Manual

There is a 903 code, but this is a solid, flat (non metallic) blue

Be interested to see the reference in the book you read, if you could take a picture of the page

I also looked through my Glasurit paint code book, this runs from the 50s to the mid 80s, and there is no listing for 908.

That wiki page is great. I am not sure where the author of this book is getting his code numbers.

Seems that the variation you’ve mentioned is very real with the 906, and that the currently mixed version is darker than the original.  This is the colour I’m going for:

The photo of the page from James Taylors book is a listing for the 280 SL. Interesting that it notes the 904 dark blue is for the hardtop only. I have a midnight blue 904 1970 280 SL sitting in the garage. 904 listed on the data card for top and car.

The James Taylor book is a nice entry level book for possible or future Pagoda owners or just interested people who wan to learn something deeper than a car magazine's article about the Pagoda.
Nevertheless, these kind of books (there are a few more like this) are full of little errors and mistakes,
and one here on the page you presented is that they (or he) says grey blue metallic = 908.
It's clearly wrong...; the correct paint color code for grey blue metallic is 906, not 908.
