Anyone know what this is?
« on: June 15, 2005, 08:24:07 »
Ordered a bunch of stuff from SLS, including trims. These came with the shipment and I have no idea what they are for. Will ask SLS but thought I'd try here first.

I do believe that is the  mounting kit for the trim strip that goes under the  license plate on the rear lower panel. This is usually seen on Euro 113s

More info;

 Just went to SLS site

Go to 113 and click on trim insert.[ next to seat insert] You will then see  kit/part 44 , consisting of 3 parts.  Called Fitment kit- decorative strip-lower liscense plate/rear
I have an extra one of these trim pieces , if anyone is in need..

Those are the clips and fasteners for the small horizontal trim between the rear bumpers on the European SL's with the long rectangular license plate.  Also the rivets are the same for the two roof rack mouldings that run in the middle of the hardtop(only for aluminum trims).

Thanks guys. I did not order that part so they must have included the mounting kit by mistake. Ciao.

Actually, these pieces are the attchments for the chrome trim that goes around the rear window. I've just recently disaasembled my hardtop, and these little devices are where the chrome trim slides in and is held tight against the hardtop. They are referred to in Gernold's hardtop restoration article--

I think if one looks a little closer you will find they are the Kit as I posted.. the window trim is similar, but the giveaway is the 3  clip fixtures in the kit..they are the  retainer mounts for plate trim and fit inside the trim. These will not fit the top trim.
 The actual parts are :
113 698 00 14-Retainer clip
001 988 54 78- Rivet Clip
000 990 30 97 -Rivet

The top garnish kit uses the same rivets and clips, but I believe the retainers are different.
You will also notice this kit has the correct number of parts for the plate garnish, whereas the top trim uses 8 clips and 16 rivits.

Sure is close thought , George..the actual Benz part # are even the
same until you get down to the actual retainer clips..  I can not find  the smae  retainer part# for the window trim, but the above is listed as retainer for  plate  garnish.

A

Thanks for that info. I completely missed the other piece in the kit and noticed just the serated piece and the rivets. I had  just pulled my hardtop apart as part of a headliner/backcovering change and repaint and found the window trim held in by these odd looking pieces=--probably why I honed right in on that being part of the hardtop.

Thanks for that reply, George.
I spotted them  , as you did , having  just done a plate trim change..
When you mentioned the hanger part, I re-investigated the parts book and sure enough, they do use some of the same parts on the hardtop.
 Nice to know...
