1966 280 for sale??
« on: November 18, 2022, 12:57:36 »
Does changing your 2.3 engine to the 2.8 make your car a 280sl :)
150k for a not very original car??

Detailed Info

Description
A very rare Original Irish 1966 Mercedes-Benz Pagoda (W113)
Full body restoration and repaint in 2019 at a cost of €90,000
Rare right hand drive model
Fantastic colour combination of Anthracite metallic paintwork and red leather.

This Pagoda was registered to its first Irish owner on July 15th 1966 and has been with its current owner for the last 8 years. In his ownership the car has been correctly maintained and benefited from a full body restoration in 2019 which included removing the engine and gearbox and the replacement of both rear quarter panels and front wings.

The car left the factory in 1966 as a 230SL (2.3 litre) and at some unknown point in its past, the engine was replaced with a correct M130 straight six 2.8 litre engine which results in far better performance for modern driving and it's fair to say that this particular example is very well sorted.

During the 2019 works, the decision was made to paint the car in a period, and model correct  Anthracite Metallic (172), rather than it's original non metallic dark green. At that time, when the engine was removed, fully serviced and all perished items replaced and it was the reassembled and prepared for regular use.

The interior has been upholstered in red leather, the seats repadded and new carpets fitted throughout. The soft top frame was stripped of its old tired canvas hood and a new black roof fitted. The supplied hard top has also been restored and fitted with a new headlining.

All exterior chrome has perfect finish and there's virtually no sign of patina. Each wheel has been fitted with correct Michelin MXV tyres which give a period correct look with the reassurance of modern tyre design. On the open road this Pagoda performs faultlessly with great performance, effortless gear changes and spirited handling.

An absolutely fantastic investment for any car collector, this would look the part in anyone's garage, and even better rolling down the street turning heads and dropping jaws.

...and as we all know, there are quite a few 2.8L engines. The claim is, it is a SL motor, which would have to be confirmed by the engine number.
There are a lot of people out there who have NO IDEA what they are talking about. The seller of a 230SL on BaT claims the engine in the car , which is a M127-982 , is a high performance version of the original M127-981.... ::)

Ah, the penny just dropped, it's original to Ireland, not an original Pagoda.  I suspect not many cars were registered in Ireland, i may be wrong, but i can't see how that would inflate the value?

Was there a 1967 280 SL produced by factory?

I believe the very first 280's were made at the very end of 1967.  Of course, in the USA they would be labeled 1968 model year.  I don't know about those delivered elsewhere.

It does look very nice from the photos. Restoration work totaling a claimed EUR 90K (around USD 100K). The USD asking price is 164K at today's exchange rate, seems steep but if it's in perfect condition, why does it have to be 'all original' to be a superb Pagoda.

yes, I saw a '67 280SL rusting away outside in the back of a Mercedes repair shop here in Austin about a year ago.  I did a double take but it was for real.

BobH, they weren't referring to the car but the fact that it was Irish.  I expect Original Irish cars are very rare.  ;)

Yes, i corrected my post afterwards when i realised.  Irish registered cars are probably rare, but i can't see that as a reason for a high price, more trying to recoup what has been spent on it.  It will probably find a buyer who isn't fussed about originality, "proper" 280's in the UK are fetching over a quarter of a million £

BobH, its only rare because for some reason the Irish were able to get the 280SL 2 years before the rest of the planet.  ;D
