Automatic, 95.5k miles, with A/C, Becker radio, hardtop. "Looks" in good shape -- no mention of rust (but does not mean there isn't any). According to the dealer's website "The car had one bare metal repaint in the correct silver exterior" and no mention of any other significant restoration.

113-044-12-019044 does not appear in the member registry nor in a Google search of the entire board. The current owner could be a member...

The price to buy seems intriguingly low at $89,500.

The dealer is just outside the Triangle area of eastern NC. There are a few people here who are out there and may know the car...if it is indeed a Carolina car!

Another typical "expert" statement.
The car is out of June 1970 production. While this may be a 1971 model (borderline), it is definitely not one of the last 880 cars built in the calendar year of 1971.

Apologies if this should be obvious, but this is the first car I've seen that has what looks like scorch marks in the dash around the clock, and the AC knobs... what might have caused that? Is it just discoloration or signs of an actual electrical problem?

Also shame they switched the door mirrors, much prefer the look of the originals

The claims in the description prompted me to check the numbers stated in the Tech Manual records and something "stumped" me.
The numbers here also say there were 830 280SLs built in CY 1971. But the detailed production serial numbers per month say the last car in December of 1970 was 23111, consequently the first car in January would have been 23112. The last car overall in February1971 was 23885. These numbers tally to only 774 units built in 1971. Anybody can explain this?

It might be that the serial numbers were allocated when the build started in 1970.
Then came Xmas and New Year, before the car was completed early the next year, which might account for couple of “extra units built” in 1971.

Thanks, but I really don't understand this. The sequence of serial numbers does not provide for additional units. Either the "830" number is incorrect (where does it originate from?) or the month-end serial numbers are not right.
