Differential Oil
« on: April 11, 2023, 12:23:37 »
I am about to refill my 1966 230SL differential oil with new oil and I find an old container still having some oil from a prior fill (when IU replaced the boot with a split boot).  That oil is Valvoline 80W-90 with Limited Slip.  I just bought the same but without the "Limited Slip".  What are the recommendations on oil for the differntial?

You should use Hypoid gear oil SAE90. See the service manual at https://www.sl113.org/wiki/Restricted/ServiceManual

Do you have a Limited Slip Diff?    If so, you need the special oil designed for LSD.    Our Diffs have a special metal tag attached to the diff that mention Special Oil required if its an LSD (in German).

250sl - later - manual
280sl - 1971 - Auto - LSD

Hi,
an "SP" can also be stamped next to the axle number and the axle ratio.
