Crankshaft damper with TWO integrated pulley slots?
« on: April 02, 2023, 20:28:17 »
Is there such a thing as a damper with two integrated pulley slots?  I've searched around and I can't find such a thing.  In this picture, slot 1, nearest engine, is for waterpump/fan and alternator.  Slot 2, the rusty one, is empty.  Then there is a gap, it's black, about 18mm.  Then there is slot 3 for power steering.
Is slot 2 integrated into the damper, and then slot 3 is bolted on for the power steering (black gap is part of this).  That's what it looks like.  Or is slot2,gap,slot 3 all part of a bolted on pulley, and I just can't see the connection between slot 1 and slot 2.
Curious if anyone has seen this before.  Thanks, Paul

Looks like you have a second groove (empty) on your water pump pulley also? Is this a SL engine? Sedan engines had different configurations than SL engines. Possibly for AC. The black gap is part of the front pulley.

Thanks Joe.  Here's a better pic.  SL engine yes 130-983-10-004560.  At some point my car had a FRIGIKING installed which was (partly) removed before I bought the car 22 yrs ago.  I am thinking of completing the removal.  I have 3 slots on the water pump pulley, the front two unused.  I have 3 slots on crank, with just the rear slot (water pump and alternator) and front slot (power steering) in use.  It would be simple to replace the water pump pulley with a single.  But since the damper appears to have two integrated slots, it would involve replacing the damper to get back to just two slots on the crank (one on damper and existing bolt on pulley for the P.S.).  Not sure I would bother with that,  maybe someday when the front seal needs replacing.  So the main question is am I seeing correctly.  It does look like I have a damper with two integrated pulley slots.  Did such a thing exist?  No discussion of such a thing on forum, or google.   Paul

Yes, the original AC system used two AC belts! The confusion results from the fact that the alternator was moved down to its original position used by cars without AC. With the factory AC, the alternator is mounted high on the engine and is driven by one belt around the water pump pulley.
