can I replace the fan clutch without removing the

can I replace the fan clutch without removing the rad?
if so do I remove the bolts from the puley or the fan?

Yes [:p]
Slacken fan belt.
Remove the 4 special bolts (10mm spanner) coupling to w/pump pulley. May have to do in two stages - slacken all 4 bolts 1/2 way to make room to remove full length.
Remove coupling and fan together then swap over.

Word of caution - these 4 bolts can be really difficult to get loose. And they round off easily, so there's a potential problem. Better try them gently and, if tight, soak in penetrant before really applying force. Maybe someone else has some good tips on this one.

THANKS i HAS A BIT OF TIME LAST NIGHT , SO i STARTED slacking the bolts and one of them got rounded out I has to remove with a visegrip

these bolts are special?

I am a radiator remove guy , but if one does not like that route, you want to a least place a piece of heavy cardoard between the rad and your work.. I see guys ruin their own radiator with one slip.. just real easy to do.
 I guess you have an auto trans..

Hello Erick,
It will be much less difficult if you car has no Factory AC. I use a long handle 10mm box end on the bolts it has never failed. You must use a high quality wrench which is thin enough to fit the box end onto the bolts. The Snap On wrench I use fits just fine. I suspect other good makes will also fit.

Loosen all four of the 10mm bolts and remove the fan and clutch together. You can loosen the radiator side  mounting bolts and move the radiator forward a bit if needed, the holes are sloted.

Yes the bolts are special with a small 10mm flange head. This diameter bolt would usually have a 13mm head.

These fan clutches are very pricey new. Six cylinder sedans of the era used the same clutch and fan blade!

To install start one of the 10mm bolts then slide the fan assembly in place, next start the other three 10mm bolts before tightening any of them down.

Anyone advise what parts would be needed to convert a 230SL to viscous fan clutch ?

Could used parts be bought reasonably ?

I changed to a viscous fan using parts from a 250 SL.  I imagine the fan unit is the same or similar to many of the sedan units.  

I bought a new 250 water pump as the 230 pump will not accomodate the viscous fan.  Also, the radiator of the 230 is about 2 inches narrower than the 250 and later radiators.  This means the fan blades will hit the metal that surrounds the air cleaner housing.  I remedied this by shortening the fan blades but you may look around and find a fan with shorter blades than the one I used.

I remove the radiator out the bottom.  It will drop right out with little effort.  It is far easier to remove the radiator than fight in limited spaces with the hood in the way.

just did it with good 10mm , took 15 min to remove with hood in place  did it in the intake side
